This is a sad picture to Joey's family, but between the picture after the hemispherectomy and this one in his wheelchair ... it gives you a peek at just how far Joey has fought to recover.

Went to Children's for doctor appt. & therapy. We ran into one of the doctors, Dr. Enrique Carrion, who took care of Joey when he "lived" in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Joey still had the feeding tube in for fluids but he was sitting up all by himself ... something he could not do four weeks earlier when he left Children's for rehab at Kennedy Krieger Institute.

Oct. 26, 1999

Joey with Elizabeth and Retona. They took care him in the afternoons into the night. He absolutely loved seeing them walking into his room. They are still two of his favorite playmates.

Retona will especially remember one night that she & Andrea took care of Joey. He did a super duper creative job IN his diaper. Took them 15 minutes to clean him up to "brand new" status. I was on the couch sleeping. I didn't sleep too much in the hospital but when Retona & Andrea were "on guard", I knew I could take some time for myself. I did not hear anything, or smell anything either. They thought I was faking sleep so they would have to change "the" diaper. We had a wonderful laugh about "the diaper" when I woke up a couple of hours later, Totally unaware of what they had been through.

Oct. 29, 1999 Halloween Party at CNMC.

My sisters got Joey the clown outfit. Auntie Sharon gave me her clown costume and dared me to dress up as a clown with Joey. We had a blast. Only one nurse recognized me. Everyone else was trying to figure out who was carrying Joey around.

"Well, Hello There!!"

Beginning of October 1999, during Joey's first stay at Children's Hospital.

No matter how much he was seizing .... he always had time to flirt with the nurses he met when he was crawling down the hallways.

Photo: Joey's hospital room with cards and pictures

March 29, 2000
These are the walls in Joey's room on 4 green. Classmates of his siblings at St. John the Evangelist School outdid themselves with cards and pictures they made for Joey. I also put pictures of Joey and his family up for him to see. At the far right, underneath the big heart, is a poster that is filled with the signatures of doctors, nurses, therapists, etc., who took care of Joey.
