Dr. David Pincus & Joey. This is the Neurosurgeon who performed four of Joey's five brain surgeries, including the hemispherectomy which was his fourth surgery. He came by to see how Joey was doing.

Joey & Sheela. She was one of many respiratory therapist's that came in to "beat and suction" Joey every 4 to 6 hours after he aspirated on Feb. 11, 2000.

What a day that was! I watched in complete horror as Joey's stomach & chest area expanded to the point that I thought he would explode. I was hysterical!! I actually screamed for the doctors. Three doctor's came running into Joey's isolation room in the PICU. They knew something was terribly wrong for me to have screamed.

You can see that Joey is not feeling well by the way he covers his face with his arm. Between the high fever and the swelling .... he is not his usual smiling, happy self. I asked the doctor if they could drain the excess fluid. They tried twice. The second time the doctor took out several tubes so that it could be tested for infection and other things. Joey was crying the hardest I have ever seen. Of course, I was crying as much as he was, as I held him as tight as I could so he wouldn't move when the needle was in his head. I hated to see my baby in pain. Thankfully the swelling went down and the rest of the fluid absorbed by itself after that.Photo: Oct 9, 2000 after 5th Surgery

Oct. 9, 2000

Joey is running a high fever after his 5th surgery.  His head is swollen from retained fluid.  This is the first time this has happened.  It needs to be absorbed into his body so that he doesn't need to have a shunt put in to drain excess fluid.

Joey had surgery on Jan. 28, 2000 to put GRIDS in his head, directly on his brain to get brain activity readings. He went back into surgery on Jan. 31, 2000 to have the GRIDS taken out along with another piece of his frontal lobe and a piece of his temporal lobe. This gives a good view of his stitches that go from ear to ear.

It is well after midnight but Joey does not care!

Nita Edwards and Joey are having lots of fun. Nita is teaching Joey how to dance. She had him kicking his legs, rolling his arms and laughing himself silly when she was showing him how to dance. Later on today Joey will have his second surgery. >>>

A few hours after Joey's first surgery. Dr. Pincus took out a piece of Joey's frontal lobe in an effort to stop the seizures.

Oct. 4, 2000
Joey grabbed Aunt Sharon's car phone. Just imagine what he could be saying. "Your mission is to rescue me! They have called my name and are now searching for me. Please, I am at Children's Hospital, 2nd floor surgical waiting room. I am the adorable one in the ambulance! Be warned, there are three 'guards' watching over me!"

<<<

Joey is playing in the waiting room while awaiting his fifth surgery. His eyes got big when they called his name .... For the record: he did not say, "hey, I'm over here, come and get me". >>>>

Joey was suctioning himself. Every effort was (and is still) made to make Joey smile & laugh, not to be afraid of the many different procedures he has had to endure.

It's funny what a mom will do to make her child more at ease. Since Joey aspirated, he needed to be suctioned by respiratory every 4 to 6 hours with us suctioning just to the beginning of his throat when needed. To keep him from being afraid of this procedure ... we would play around with the "suction wand". Hence, Joey suctioning mommy while we all laughed!

Dr. Gaillard & Joey waiting to have another CATScan done to see how things look in Joey's head. Dr. Gaillard did the brain mapping during all of the surgeries and also monitored Joey the weekend he had the GRIDS directly on his brain.
